Are You A Minivan or SUV Mom?

(Image source. This one is also hilarious.)

You guys, I have a confession. I drive a minivan...

And I LOVE it!

I never thought in all of my life that I would be the proud owner of the ultimate mom vehicle, but it is probably one of the top five greatest life choices I've made yet. Dual sliding doors, 8-seater, great gas mileage, etc. It is probably the most economical and mature choice we've made, that's for certain. We even went so far as to name her, which is something I've never done with my cars before, and proves my attachment to the big hunk of metal. (We call her Delilah.) I'm telling you, minivans are the up and coming thing, people. Consider it an extension of the Normcore trend. I mean, really, what goes better with a pair of sneakers, mom jeans, and a baseball cap? BING-O! You nailed it. A MINIVAN.

I suppose there are some of you out there who don't share my enthusiasm for God's gift to parents (besides the obvious little creatures that go in it and systematically destroy it), and that's where the SUV comes in. I get it, I get it. It's more sleek, probably a bit more masculine for all the dudes out there, and just feels a little less, "I'm covered in Cheerios and haven't slept in over two years" and more, "I am cool, calm, collected and I still got it."

So, I want to open this very real parental debate to all of you fine people. If you have children, are expecting children, or plan to have children someday, there will come a time in your life when you will have to choose. What say ye?

Minivan or SUV?

Bahahaha! The window sticker cracks me up! I've been trying to convince hubs that we can't survive in two sedans with kiddo and pup.... So this debate will come up soon, I'm sure.

We're thinking a Honda Pilot if we live by family that does things we would need 4 wheel drive for. If not we'll definitely go the mini van route!

okay so growing up my family had 2 minivans ... ugh. and so when i got my drivers license i had the pleasure of driving the 'better' of the two. it. was. awful. i couldn't even make a proper u-turn in it! the turn radius was awful. i promised myself i would never drive a minivan again! so, when my babies came, i traded my topless jeep wrangler for a jeep commander. although, once charlotte is big enough to face forward, we're getting another wrangler. besides groceries and the stroller i don't need all that extra room in my car.

This couldn't come at a better time! Okay so our SUV had to go in to get repaired (read trailor hitch blown into door from gusts of wind...good stuff) so we got a minivan to see if it would ever be a possibility someday. We only have one baby now so the SUV is doable and I, like you, never envisioned myself a minivan kinda gal but these last couple days I'm kinda digging it. The sliding doors make it so much easier to not hit the car next to you at Target and it's so much roomier. My only issue with it is every time I sit in the front seat I feel like I'm driving with my mom. Or I'm forty years old. Did you ever have that feeling? I'm thinking once we have more kids we will eventually cave and get one.

I never really had a problem with owning a minivan, so when we needed to upgrade our vehicle after baby #3, that's what we got. Mr. Boss was the one to pick it out, and he chose a Chevy Uplander because, to him, it was the least minivan-looking minivan. (He is not as fond of the whole minivan thing.) Then he went and named it the Van Halen.
We just added baby #5, which means we are using up every bit of space in the 7-seater. An upgrade is definitely in our future. So, we've been having this same discussion, minivan or suv... I just wish he'd stop suggesting a 15-passenger van. Yikes. That is where I draw the line.

(But seriously, what do you drive? An extra seat seems so luxurious. Ha ha...)

SUV. But, I only have one kid. So, my vote could change over time. :)

I'm sorry Abbey...but I could NEVER get on the minivan train...and we have 4 kids. Maybe it's a southern thing? Kuddos to you tho, as I've always secretly envied that ease it provides my minivan momma friends. :) And maybe someday I'll eat my words.

Yes, the Pilot does make sense for the 4-wheel drive. We almost went with one, but the storage and back seat capacity was terrible. Good for a couple of kids, but we are planning on having more than just two, so the minivan is better for more room and convenience.

Wranglers are awesome! And yes, I feel your pain of being forced to drive one. I grew up in a minivan, too, and LOATHED them. We have the Honda Odyssey, which I like to call the sports car of the minivan. Drives smooth and is a lot more sleek than that old piece of crap Dodge Caravan from the 80's! :)

Yikes! I am sorry to hear about your SUV! The sliding doors have changed my world, and ours comes with the key fob for opening both sliding doors. That simple feature alone has changed my world while shopping with two little ones. And, surprisingly, I don't feel old or like I'm driving with my mom! The dashboard thing in our Odyssey kind of reminds me of a spaceship, so I kind of feel like I am Space Mountain, ha. Wearing a leather jacket and lots of accessories helps to tone out the "I'm an old mom" feeling, too ;)

Van Halen is a most excellent name! We drive the Honda Odyssey. It has two row seats, but the middle seat in the first row can be taken out to turn them into bucket seats. I totally suggest it. Like I mentioned in the comment above, the Odyssey is the sports car of the minivans, IMO. Also, I know quite a few families who drive the 15-passenger van, and they love it! But, I am with you on drawing the line there... pretty sure I would wipe out one too many mailboxes ;)

Never say never, Kristen! ;) But, given the fact that you already have 4 kids, you probably won't ever cross over. You can just come drive mine in secret ;)

We are an SUV family...for now. I have to admit - nothing makes me wish I had (automatic!) sliding doors more than this rainy weather we've been having.

I totally get that a minivan is probably the more practical choice, but I just can't quite bring myself to do it. Of course, once we start doing carpool I may change my tune ;)

I currently have an SUV and only 1 child and it's great.... but I'm leaning more and more towards Mini Van whenever #2 comes along.
